#VERYWANG: Liza Soberano ecstatic over My Ex and Whys’ box office success

Star Cinema’s My Ex and Whys, the date movie about failed relationships and giving second chances, is making a killing at the local box office.

The production outfit has the figures and it reported that the romantic comedy earned over P100 million in just three days and more than 200 million as of this writing. The film also made a splash on it’s opening a day after Valentine’s Day raking in P31.5 million.

Liza Soberano, the romantic flick’s lead star, along with Enrique Gil, couldn’t contain her happiness when Manila Standard asked her about the movie’s box office performance. At the Maybelline event over the weekend, the 19-year-old star said she felt overwhelmed when she initially learned about it.

“At first, we were informed that it earned 27 million on its first day, then at around 2 a.m. we received another news that it actually earned 31.5 million. I never expected that we would get that much support for the movie,” the Kapamilya star shared.

It’s only a matter of time before it beats the overall gross of the two other movies that starred LizQuen.

Liza and Enrique first worked together in a 2013 film top billed by Dingdong Dantes and Bea Alonzo playing support roles. It was in 2015 when they headlined Just The Way You Are. The film earned P12 million on its first day of showing and breached the P100 million pesos mark four weeks later.

“My Ex and Whys,” starring Kapamilya star Liza Soberano, is a certified blockbuster

In 2016, LizQuen starred in another romcom entitled Everyday I Love You, which earned P16 million on its first day and ended its commercial run with P103 million gross at the domestic box office.

As soon as she heard the “good news” from Star Cinema, she immediately took to Instagram and shared it with her almost five million followers, which she considers instrumental to the film’s success.

“I read up online to see feedback and write ups. I’ve been going to block screenings and I’ve been touched by what my supporters are telling me about my performance in the movie. The fact that it is a Cathy Garcia directed film, I think that’s enough reason for the people to watch it. At the same time, the LizQuen fans are also very supportive, that’s one of the factors why this film is a big success,” she enthused.

Talking about the film, Liza said that her role here is the most mature role and “more realistic” compared to other projects she’s in the done past but she’s quick to clear that she’s not really headed in doing adult roles. She’s also very careful in choosing her material.

“The management told me that in my next teleserye, my character would be more mature compared to the previous roles that I played. But I asked them if I could do something not too much mature because I still want to maintain my youth, and I think that’s what people still want to see from me. I don’t want to rush into becoming older than what I really am,” the actress shared.

But in terms of emotions of the characters that she’s going to play, she furthered that there will be some growth and maturity. In fact, she’s already preparing for two teleseryes for this year. She couldn’t divulge specific details about the project but she said that for the first one, she’s going to be part of it for the pilot week only but for the second project, it’s going to be a follow-up to her top-rating primetime drama, Dolce Amore.
