SMALL but terrible, insanely talented, adorably cute—we have a long list of adjectives to describe young talents of today simply because we can watch them many times over on television or on the big screen without getting bored.
Having child stars in a show is one of the reasons why a television program is still fun to watch. Not only that their presence make TV viewing still safe for young children, child stars also serve as inspiration to a wide range of audiences.
In their very young age, it’s interesting to note that they already made their mark in showbiz, in their own little way. Take Lyca Gairanod for example. The Voice Kids champion drew cheers with her rendition of “Tell The World of His Love,” which she performed as part of Pope Francis’ meeting with Filipino families last week. This is probably one of the career highlights of the 10-year-old kid who is known for her Cinderella-like story. The young singer has also launched her acting career via her appearance in an MMK episode. Like Lyca, a few more adorable kids have been introduced in local showbiz.
The charming sons of former child celebrities Niño Muhlach and Vandolf Quizon are also making their small steps in joining the big league, so to speak.
Starting early in showbiz, Alonzo Muhlach and Vito Quizon are in for a big break in Goin’ Bulilit as they display their comedic skills for their first appearance in the longtime-running gag show over the weekend. While it’s Vito’s first time to experience being in the limelight all by himself, Alonzo already has a pretty good head start. He is best known for being Ryzza Mae Dizon’s sidekick in the Ryzza Mae Show. He also joined the child wonder in the 2014 MMFF entry, My Big Bossing.
But if charm is all what it takes to make it big as a child star in local tinsel town, Jana Agoncillo definitely fits the mold. She instantly mesmerized audiences with her role as the adorable Baby on Dream Dad. The child sensation first appeared in a fast food commercial with veteran actress Marita Zobel with the song “Downtown” as musical score. She also appeared in Honesto and Ikaw Lamang before getting the big break of starring in her own series.
And just like the child stars in the past, a few talents have already shown a lot of potential by excelling in the drama department. Case in point, Ashley Sarmiento and Rhed Bustamante has recently clinched the title roles in an afternoon series (Flordeliza) for showing exceptional drama skills. The two were both discovered in Showtime during the segment “Bida Kapamilya.”
With their incredible wit, amazing talent and infectious smiles, these child stars face a bright future in showbiz. We can forgive them if they would act silly on the camera because they are kids after all.
Soon enough, these kids will grow. Some of them would lead a normal life—attend school then choose an entirely different profession. But some of them would still pursue their dream of becoming mature actors and go through an awkward stage where they can hardly get a role because they are either too young or too old for the given role. Thus, before they reach that awkward stage then perhaps make sad or event shocking headlines, let’s just enjoy their cuteness overload until it lasts.
