IMAGINARIUM: a festival of the absurd


Manila’s newest performing arts group, The Sandbox Collective, is launching The Imaginarium, a multi-arts festival of the absurd running from October 28 to 31 at the Peta Theater Center.
The festival will feature performances, presentations, and collaborations of various media, including film, fashion, dance, visual arts, improv, spoken word, music, food and beverage and theater.

After its critically acclaimed run at the RCBC Theater, Kooman and Dimond’s Dani Girl finds its way back onstage at the PETA Center. Dani Girl follows a 9-year old girl’s battle with leukemia and her fantastical quest to get back her hair. Together with her guardian angel Raph and her new friend Marty, Dani goes on an imaginary journey to find the answer to the question “Why is cancer?” Hilarious and heartbreaking, Dani Girl inspires people to find meaning in life despite the prospect of death, courage in the face of fear, and hope in the face of despair. Dani Girl is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

The Maids

Inspired by real-life people and events, The Maids by French absurdist playwright Jean Genet follows two sadomasochistic sisters, Claire and Solange, who take turns role-playing as their employer, the Madam. They have denounced her criminal lover, Monsieur, secretly to the police but once the notorious criminal is set free, they are left with no recourse but to plot out Madam’s death before they are discovered. In ritual, however, they end up playing their roles all too well. Headlining the performance is Anton Juan, Broadway World Philippines awardee for Best Actor, Red Turnip Theater’s Topper Fabregas, and Joel Saracho.

The Glass Menagerie

The Glass Menagerie is only one of the remnants of Tom Wingfield’s past life. Shadowed by the portrait of a smiling father, the play delves into Tom’s memories with his family while the world teeters on the brink of the Second World War. Previously presented by Upstart Soundstage as a semi-staged reading, the production will be fully staged, this time featuring iconoclastic images inspired by classical art, allowing audiences a more intimate glimpse at Tom’s truth. The show will feature Jay Glorioso, Nelsito Gomez, Justine Peña, and JC Santos. The Glass Menagerie is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Unbeknownst to them, they eventually find themselves locked inside a metal room, and forced to fight for their own survival. The play will be presented alongside Niki Calma’s Katabi.

With book and lyrics by Michael Lluberes and music and additional lyrics by Joe Maloney, The Boy in the Bathroom is a quirky yet compelling musical that explores the relationship between a boy named David and his mother Pam. As Pam spends her days keeping the house clean, David has chosen to lock himself in the little world he’s made for himself in his bathroom, scribbling on toilet paper and eating only what can fit under the door. But when an unforeseen variable named Julie enters the picture, both David and Pam’s respective worlds are shaken and possibly, changed for good. The Boy in the Bathroom will feature Topper Fabregas, Caisa Borromeo and Sheila Francisco. The Boy in the Bathroom was originally developed in The New York Musical Theatre Festival. The world premiere was presented by The Chance Theater, April 2011.

The Tony award-winning play, The Pillowman was written by Irish playwright, Martin McDonagh. The story revolves around Katurian a fiction writer who has been interrogated by two detectives about the gruesome content of his short stories and their eerie similarities to a number of murders occurring in town. The Pillowman will be directed by Ed Lacson Jr. as a mixed-media public reading and will feature Audie Gemora, Niccolo Manhan, Richard Cunanan, and Robie Zialcita.

Thursday Night Gala traverses the spectrum of electronic music from electronic noise waves to synth-pop. B.P. Valenzuela a 19-year old ambient synth-pop producer/singer-songwriter while KaapiN is an experimental indie electronic duo from Cebu with an electronic noise wave + shamanistic vibe. Their set will feature mixed media and video animation. Last but not least is Pedicab, formed in 2004, an electronic rock group with Diego Mapa, Jason Caballa, Mike Dizon, RA Rivera and Raimund Marasigan (of The Eraserheads). Thursday Night Gala is a collaboration of different electronic acts homogenously mixing together to put you in aural overdrive.

Leeroy New
Born in General Santos City, Leeroy New is one of the most exciting Filipino artists today. He graduated from Philippine High School of the Arts and received his Fine Arts degree from the University of the Philippines. He is well-known for his unconventional, provocative work with sculptures, outdoor installations, film, theater and fashion. In 2011, New was commissioned by renowned stylist Nicola Formichetti to create a costume for Lady Gaga. Inspired by his previous Fall 2010 collaboration with Kermit, New made a cast of Gaga’s body, sculpted with clay and molded with silicon.

Dex Fernandez
Dex Fernandez is an interdisciplinary artist based in Caloocan. Drawing from sources such as street art and food footage, Fernandez’s practice ranges from paintings and drawings to murals, mixed media works and vintage photography-inspired posters from thrift shops. Through juxtaposition of religious iconography with pop imagery, children’s drawings, tattoo motives and cut outs from adult magazines, Fernandez’s eclectic compositions challenge the traditional definitions of high culture and fine art. By adding imaginary landscapes, patterns and creatures to found images, he exposes the idea of found memories and appropriation. Works of Dex Fernandez have been exhibited in the Philippines and internationally.
