POP star Sarah Geronimo topped the list of nominees for the 27th Awit Awards, leading the way with nine nods ahead of rapper Gloc9 with eight.
Trailing Sarah and Gloc9 in overall nominations, with six nods each are Regine Velasquez, KZ Tandingan, and Sam Concepcion.
Local artists consider the Awit Awards the most prestigious music awards that recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry. The Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI), which is responsible for awarding music recording certifications in the country, gives the awards annually.
Sarah, a six-time Awit-Awards winner, scooped a nomination in the coveted Album of the Year for her 2013 CD, Expressions. She also picked up a nod in the Best Female Recording Artist, Best RnB Recording, and Music Video of the Year categories, among others.
Expressions’ release marked Sarah’s 25th birthday, her 10th year anniversary in the entertainment industry, and her debut as a songwriter. It consists of nine original songs and two covers. It has produced two chart-topping singles, “Ikot-ikot” and “Tayo.”
Interestingly, the album won the hearts of critics but failed to reach consumer appeal. In fact, Expressions is Sarah’s worst selling studio album to date with just over 15,000 units sold despite having been released almost a year ago.
