While we have TV ratings and advertising revenues as serious subjects of the destructive network war, we also have TV awards and recognitions as hot topics that initiate word war among rabid fans. Case in point, the recent list of nominees at the New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards has spurred heated verbal arguments between Kapuso and Kapamilya fans.
The Philippines has been getting recognition from the New York Festival these past few years. To date, the country has won a total of 19 medals, 12 of which were won by GMA Network and 7 by ABS-CBN.
Now on its 57th edition, the event is known throughout the world for honoring the best in TV and film industries. It mirrors today’s global trends and encourages the next generation of story-tellers and talents in different categories such as animation, comedy, drama, documentary, news and music videos to name a few.
This year, the country bagged a total of 16 nominations. Based on the festival’s website, eleven entries from GMA Network were chosen as finalists and five programs from ABS-CBN complete the roster of nominees from the Philippines.
Programs, specials, a music video, and a promotional package from the Kapuso network, as well as broadcast journalists Jessica Soho, are among those selected as finalists. GMA News and Public Affairs alone has nine entries achieving finalist status. Meanwhile, the Kapamilya network’s entries that made the cut are educational program Matanglawin, documentary Agosto Beinte-Uno: Ang Pagpatay Kay Ninoy Aquino, another documentary called Tagas ng Minahan and a promotional video called Sprout.
For the rabid fans of the rival networks, these awards and nominations are not just simply numbers, they also serve as their gauge on who the best network really is in terms of providing good and quality programming that meets global standards. Most fanatics are serious enough to conclude, while throwing curse words and unintelligible arguments at each other, that the more awards and recognitions a network gets from a foreign award giving body the better it is in providing quality programs.
We cannot discount their point because unlike locally based award giving bodies that recognize film and television works, the New York Festival possesses an unquestionable credibility. For one, it is judged by award winning directors, producers, writers, actors and various other creative media professionals from across the globe. That means, all entries are judged by panels of industry experts that decide which program would be elevated as gold medal winner and which one deserves just a certificate.
In this year’s edition of the festival, it’s clear that the Kapuso network has edged out its rival based on the numbers of nomination. It’s good to note that the judging panel has more than a hundred members, three ABS-CBN executives are members of the grand jury and one GMA Network executive is part of the advisory board.
The winners will be announced in April and guess what, there’s going to be another heated debate among fans, whatever the results would be.
