It’s a mix of everything at the 38th edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival. Starting this Christmas a slew of films ranging from drama to action and from comedy to fantasy will hit all the major theaters in the metropolis.
The total of seven festival entries will be shown, they are Shake Rattle & Roll XIV, El Presidente, Thy Womb, The Strangers, Si Enteng, Si Agimat at si Ako, Sisterakas and One More Try.
Regal Film’s entry is the 14th installment of the horror series, which normally comes in trilogy. This year,Chito S. Roño is at the helm of all the three episodes—“Pamana,” “Lost Command,” and “Unwanted.” The film stars Janice de Belen, Herbert Bautista,Dennis Trillo, Lovi Poe, Paulo Avelino, Martin Escudero and Vhong Navarro.
El Presidente (Scenema Concept International) is a bio-epic about the country’s first president. The film that bids for Best Picture stars more than 50 actors including E.R. Ejercito in the lead title role, with Cesar Montano, Christopher de Leon, Nora Aunor, andCristine Reyes in supporting roles.
Another film that includes the superstar in the billing is the festival quality movie, Thy Womb (Centerstage Productions). The drama directed by Brillante Mendoza and also stars Lovi Poe and Mercedes Cabral has already been exhibited in major film festivals overseas where it already won important awards including best director and best actress for Nora Aunor.
One more for the horror genre is Quantum Film’s The Stranger. Described as a teen horror flick, it features an ensemble cast of Star magic talents including Enchong Dee, Julia Montes, Enrique Gil and JM De Guzman. The film revolves around the stories of the mythical aswangs.
A possible box-office hit is Si Agimat, Si Enteng at Ako is a fantasy action starring Vic Sotto, Bong Revilla and Judy Ann Santos. The film is a fusion of Agimat and Enteng Kabisote film franchise. It is a joint production by five movie outfits, Octoarts Films, M-zet Productions, Imus Productions, APT Entertainment and GMA Films.
The entry that might challenge the fantasy action in terms of box office returns is Sisterakas, a comedy movie about sibling rivalry starring Kris Aquino, AiAi Delas Alas, and Vice Ganda.
Another one for the fans of comedy is Sosy Problems. This movie is about a group of young women speaking broken tagalong mixed with English. It stars are Rhian Ramos, Heart Evangelista, Solenn Heussaff , and Bianca King. GMA Films produced the movie.
Finally, Star Cinema’s One More Try is a romantic drama film starring Angelica Panganiban, Dingdong Dantes, Zanjoe Marudo and Angel Locsin. The only film poised to reap acting awards, if the festival jurors would choose Angelica or Angel over Nora.
So there, here’s your list of Pinoy films you can enjoy this Christmas, or you can head to an Imax theater and ignore these films altogether.
