It’s been a week or so since we had a good celebrity death rumor. The latest victim of the dreaded online celebrity death hoax is American rapper Soulja Boy.
The rumor about him jumping to his death while singing his Superman song is similar to rumors that Bobby McFerrin (singer of Don’t Worry, Be Happy) killed himself, or that Meatloaf died from bad meatloaf. People felt these rumors were so ironic that they had to be true. However, they’re all false.
We’re not sure how it started, but somehow a few folks on Twitter got the idea that Soulja Boy died on Thursday, February 2, 2012. It appears that the Soulja Box death hoax started with a Twitter user named @blackstewie.
Born DeAndre Cortez Way on July 28, 1990, he is popularly known as Soulja Boy. In September 2007, his single
“Crank That (Soulja Boy)” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was initially self-published on the internet, and it later became a number-one hit in the United States for seven non-consecutive weeks starting in September 2007. On August 17 Way was listed at #18 on the Forbes list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings of 2010 earning $7 million for that year.
