Who’s going to play the next Darna?

When ABS-CBN acquired the rights to 13 Mars Ravelo titles including the legendary tale of the Pinay superhero Darna, people instantly speculated that the International Emmy nominated actress Angel Locsin would reprise the title role. But since Angel is loaded with numerous projects, it’s highly unlikely.

This time, while no clear picture yet on who’s going to wear the sexy mythical costume, the best question people should be asking is if the Kapamilya network would recreate Darna as a television series or a big action movie. While most will definitely prefer the first, so that they could compare Angel or Marian Rivera to next person to portray the role, seeing Darna flies on the silver screen is a much better idea most especially if ABSCBN’s production arm would employ the latest technology in movie making.

We haven’t seen any grand production coming from Star Cinema of late. It’s about time that the production outfit stops creating romantic comedies that do not show much of its actors’ talent nor the production’s ability to create visually arousing films. And with Darna, which was last seen on the big screen in 1994 starring the voluptuous and dusky Anjanette Abayari (Regine Velasquez just did a cameo as Darna in 2003 in Captain Barbell movie), it’s good to come up with a new version or recreate the film. It’s the trend now in Hollywood, and following suit won’t really be a big deal.

Moving on, in an episode of Juicy, talk show host IC Mendoza said that Kapamilya network bosses have already chosen young star Jessy Mendiola to reprise the iconic role. In the project, which is yet to be identified whether a film or a TV series, Angel will still be part of but she will just appear to pass the stone to the Sabel star. This could be the most logical thing to do although Angel’s fans clamor for their idol to done the Darna costume again. Noticeably, Angel is having some weight issues that the sexy costume may not fit the way it did to her six years ago.
