In April 2009, Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were rumored to have landed on the shores of Boracay to grace the soft opening of Shangri-La Resort. Just this year, in February, the ace couple was also reported to have inquired about a possible adoption of a Filipino child from Hospicio de San Jose in Manila. So the big question now: Are they really coming here in the Philippines?
Last week when I went to Siargao (an island 800 kilometers southeast of Manila in the province of Surigao del Norte), I was informed that Brad and Angelina are indeed going to visit the Philippines, and an elegant and exclusive resort, which will serve as their home in the Philippines during their stay, is currently being renovated. The resort is called Dedon Island Resort, which is tucked away in a quiet little corner of Siargao nestled between a placid lagoon fringed by white sand beaches and mangroves.
According to our guide from the Department of Tourism, one person can stay in one of the villas, which are similar to the tropical pagodas of Thailand, for the price ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 pesos a night.
When our group reached the resort’s poolside, I noticed that the trunks of coconut trees around the area are curved with faces similar to that of the anitos. The beach beds are particularly striking because of it’s elegant design, which fused local and German technology, I was told.
A British journalist, who is documenting the development in the almost finished renovation, said that the couple will arrive in the latter part of the year, as oppose to the previous reports that Brangelina would come around June (Dedon will officially open in July).
During the course of the short conversation, no plan of adopting a Filipino kid was mentioned.
Formerly called Pansukian Beach Resort, it was bought by furniture company Dedon in 2010. French designer Jean-Marie Massaud and his architectural partner Daniel Pouzet are renovating the property to match the vision of Dedon Places, which is building one-of-a-kind accommodations around the world.
Though my previous reading said that the couple would rather immerse in the local life of the places they visit, if Brangelina are indeed coming to the Philippines, this place can complement their sophisticated taste.
