Once upon a time, there was only MTV Pilipinas. Then a local music channel was born and becomes a major player on the music scene.
For more than a decade now, MYX has been consistent in giving local artists the venue to showcase their talent, and as the only music channel in the Philippines catering to Filipino taste, it became successful in promoting OPM. In effect, every year that Myx opens the poll for the Myx Music Awards, thousand of viewers vote to show their admiration for their idols.
In the sixth edition of the now called MMA, or MYX Music Awards, thousands of votes were cast and winners were revealed in a very posh black and white party at the Music Museum on March 16.
Like in the previous years, the opening number was the most anticipated part of the show. Teen singers Sam Concepcion and Elmo Magalona, Best New Artist Tanya Markova, premier vocal group The CompanY, bossa nova singer Sitti, Callalily’s frontman Kean Cipriano, and up-and-coming contemporary trio Opera Belles were all part of the event’s opening number.
Attended by some of the brightest local music artists, the awarding ceremony became a statement that “OPM is very much live.” The statement itself was actually the theme of the event and was the mantra that echoed from the begging till the end of the show.
One of the major highlights of the program was the awarding of Myx Magna Award to Regine Velasquez who is celebrating her 25th year in the music business. A tribute to the songbird received an overwhelming approval from the crowd. Among the performers that belted Regine’s hits were Kyla, Yeng Constantino, Frenchescka Farr, Julieanne, Rachelle Ann Go, Mark Bautista, and Christian Bautista.
Meanwhile, walking home as the night’s biggest winner was Yeng Constantino who bagged five awards, including the Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Music Video for her single “Jeepney Love Story” that also won Favorite Song.
