American singer Lady Gaga is the most popular living celebrity in cyberspace if we are to consider the number of her followers on leading social networking, microblogging, and video sharing sites. The pop icon has over 11 million fans on Facebook, and almost 5 million followers on Twitter, not to mention that her music videos are among the most-watched on YouTube.
On the local scene on the other hand, Showtime hosts Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis appear to be the most popular celebrities among the netizens. According to famecount.com, an independent web application that uses data from social networks such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook to track and help people connect with the most popular stars of the web, Vice Ganda has around 1.8 million fans on Facebook while the former Dyosa star’s tweets are being followed by some 348,000 registered accounts on Twitter.
In all platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube), the most popular local names are interestingly not the celebrities, they are actually politicians who have dominated cyberspace to woo more votes in the recent elections. With the exception to comedic duo that landed in third place, in particular order, the famous names are: Benigno Aquino, Manny Villar, Moymoy Palaboy, Gilbert Teodoro, and Mar Roxas. No wonder politics is equally entertaining.
